Back garden got worked on too!

It’s probably a little strange that we are growing in both the allotment and the back garden, but some plants can be better managed at home for starters (fruit bushes for example).  Also, we can get a better chance of saving correctly pollinated seeds if we keep some things separate!  Our garden also has 6ft…

Breakfast of diggers!

Hubby wanted a good breakfast to sustain him before doing a few hours at the plot today.  Good smoked back bacon, with lightly fried slices of mushroom, brown seeded bread and lashings of brown sauce.  He was happily digging for almost 2 hours fueled by this sarnie!  (Lesson has been learnt!)

The rain stopped! For a few hours…

We’ve been able to make some progress today! Hurrah!  The rain has been almost constant for about 10 days here on our hill, so it’s been wonderful to get out and do something constructive! This is our first year of allotmenting!  We’ve been growing for about 6 years in the back garden, but this is…

Hard graft!

Despite the constant rain and general sludginess of the garden, the workmen arrived to work on next door’s garden today.  They are scraping off all their soil and making a driveway and in the meantime taking down the fence between us and replacing it. This also meant that all plants along that fence were going. …

Moving the gooseberry bush

Today was a big job!  We have a wonderful, large and very productive gooseberry bush, which was just unfortunately planted in the wrong place, which was evident after it had grown for a few years. It was blocking our way to get to the water butt that collects our garage’s rain water, so had to…

Pricking out time.

One of the small annoyances of this year has been that the labels I wrote out for the seedlings a month ago have faded in the rain and snow-shine!  (I can’t say we’ve had sunshine really!)  So I’ve for a collection of brassicas which will be either broccoli, cauliflower, kale or winter cabbage, should be…

Chilli plant marathon and more

Brilliant amount of sunshine today, so all the chilli plants got a stint in the poly-tunnel to soak up some rays!  Still have to move them back indoors before they get too cool in the evenings though, most surfaces in the house have plants on them! We have the following: phase 1 seedlings already in…

Rose relocation time!

We have two yellow roses growing in our front garden, by the fence between our neighbours and ourselves.  The fence is going to replaced shortly, so I’m trying to see if the roses can be saved.  Usually they have very deep and wide rooting systems, so I’m not too sure if they will survive being…

World record for most thorny gooseberry?!

We’ve been growing in the back garden for 6 years now, both fruits and vegetables.  This year we decided to be brave and take the plunge to commit to an allotment as well!  So much growing space, the possibilities seem endless; we are both delighted and intimidated in equal measure I think! Anyway, one of…
